Welcome to The Cortes Women's Resource Centre

A Bit About Us

Gather, Coordinate, Create Together

The Cortes Island Women's Centre sits on the unceded territory of the Klahoose, Tla’amin, Qualicum, Kwiakah peoples and exists to support and connect women* in a safe, non-judgmental environment. We work within a feminist framework to educate the community and provide resources that empower women and children to nurture their emotional well-being, physical safety and financial security. We celebrate the uniqueness and individuality of our diverse membership and welcome all Cortes Island women to share their experience, skills, and strength as well as their compassion, wisdom and stories.

*women-identifying and non-binary

In conjunction with commitments to have the CWC be an inclusive and intersectional community space we have also made commitment in line with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (www.un.org) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report’s Calls to Action (www.nctr.ca.) The CWC is making deliberate steps to decolonize and Indigenize the Centre and are doing so by starting to implement formal policies and practices within the CWC to support and honour respectful relationships with Elders and Traditional Knowledge Keepers in our community. We acknowledge that in order to decolonize, we must critically examine the effects of colonization and decentralize white privilege within our communities and our social justice work. With permission, we must actively create opportunities for employment, engagement, Indigenous presence and knowledges; as well as safe, physical spaces that reflect the priorities, interests, concerns and sovereignty of local Indigenous peoples. Again, if we are interested in decolonization, it is imperative that we follow those who are most qualified to lead.

Cortes Women's Centre at a Glance

A Bit of Background

The Cortes Women's Resource Centre was created to achieve a balance of power within the Cortes Island community (gender-based, political & economic).  Engineered by a group of 6 thoughtful, determined women who volunteered their time - the Centre opened in January 2019.

Since our founding in 2019, we have been determined to make an impact on Cortes and be a community resource, gathering place and promote creative empowerment for women, children*, trans and non-binary individuals. The core of our efforts is to bring our team’s fresh ideas and passion to the range of activities we’re involved in. Through all of our endeavours we hope to display the conviction behind our beliefs and create opportunities for the island community members.

Connecting Resources

being a bridge to getting help

With this initiative, our goal is to promote great opportunities for those in need. With access to the right resources, people can become empowered by their own abilities and gain the confidence to fulfill their potential. Learn more about our work by getting in touch with our team today.

Community Workshops

empowering each other

With our organization’s mission always in mind, we strive to provide a place for workshops that bring people together. We will provide a space for people to run their own workshops. Contact us to bring a workshop to the centre.

 Donation Drop-Off

food, toiletries, book, arts supplies, monetary

At Cortes Women's Centre, we are dedicated to stepping up our efforts in addressing this issue. Donation Drop-Off is by no means an easy feat, but through cooperation and community empowerment we believe we can facilitate progress in this area. We are always striving to give to those who need it on the island and invite you to learn more and lend your support. Schedule a drop off time by emailing the centre or drop off donations during open hours.
